Evidence of tattooing dates back to the great pyramid times in Egypt, where tattoos were sported to show one’s status. But more surprisingly was the discovery in 1991, when Otzi the Ice Man was unearthed. After being frozen since around 3000 BC, archaeologists found that the mummified Otzi had 57 different markings on his body, resembling tattoos.

There are mentions of tattooing in the Bible which indicate that it was a common practice among the ancients of the Middle East.

The art of the tattooing process has come a long way since it’s early days, when the method was a painful process of cutting designs into the flesh and rubbing ashes into the fresh wound.

At the turn of the century in New York City, Samuel O’Reily offered a tattoo service in Chatham Square, where people who could afford his costly service, traveled from all across the United States to be tattooed with the first electric tattoo gun. That tattoo gun of yesteryear has undergone few changes. However, much has improved in the area of sterilization, making this a safe procedure when performed under sterilized conditions by a certified artist.

It was in the 1960’s that the art of tattooing really took off thanks to the hippie era. As a way for this generation of free thinkers to express themselves, tattooing gained increased popularity. One of many popular tattoos in the sixties was the peace sign.

A tattoo is an artistic way to make a statement, to show the world what you stand for. But keep in mind before you get that tattoo, this is a permanent statement. For instance, Mickey Mouse may be cute on your ankle when you are 18 years old, but will you still think him cute when you’re 60?

As tattoos become more and more popular, the techniques for removing them are growing. Depending upon the complexity and location of the tattoo and your skin type, a tattoo can be removed with varying results.

There are several different methods available to remove tattoos. The three most common techniques are laser surgery (also known as Intense Pulsed Light therapy or IPL), excision and dermabrasion. Laser surgery is the most common and delivers the best results.

While results can be quite good, not all tattoos can be completely removed. Tattoos, after all, are meant to be permanent. Advances in ink quality have made tattoos brighter and more colorful and therefore more difficult to remove completely.

Clients with pale skin usually see the best results. Smaller, older tattoos that are located on the arms, chest, buttocks or legs are the easiest to remove. Newer tattoos or tattoos located on areas of the body with less fat are more difficult to remove.

On darker skin, a more cautious approach should be used. Multiple sessions may be necessary to minimize the risk of hyperpigmentation (excessive color) or hypopigmentation (excessive fading). If the ink color is too close to the natural skin color, total removal may not be possible.

Keloid scarring is also a possibility for darker-skinned patients. If your skin is prone to these types of scars, a patch test should be performed.

Simple tattoos can be removed in as few as two to four treatments. Complex tattoo removal requires a longer treatment schedule, often requiring as many as ten treatments over many months.
For best results, consult with a professional tattoo removal specialist.

…if the movie didn’t suck.

Today we bring to you a guy who wanted to get a tattoo of his favorite movie on his arm. This movie just so happened to be “Haunted Mansion” the disney flick that flopped like a big chick in a small pool. But hey, lets give the dude some credit, he loved that damn movie so much that he decided to get it remembered for ever on his arm. Well good for him. We are happy to let him know that Wrecking Balm will always be there for him, so there is no need to worry.

So next time you like a movie so much, that you decide you want to let the world know by getting a tattoo with the movies logo, try not to make it a Disney movie and also try not to make it a movie that is in the theaters for like 8 days then straight to DVD.

Of course you had to know that Angelina Jolie was originally married to Billy Bob Thorton? She proudly displayed his name on her arm above some weird looking dragon thing. The tattoo looked like something you would have seen come out of the local county jail. But still that was her man, at the time, so she rocked his name with pride on her arm.

Well years pass and Angelina moved on to Brad Pitt. So rather then make the same mistake twice she went for something a little more kosher. She got a tribute to their kids on her arm.

That’s nice right? But you would have thought with all the cash that Angelina has she would have been able to afford a better laser tattoo removal specialist, right?

Well from looking at the picture and other past pictures of the tattoo we have come to one conclusion. That the ink that must have been used in the tattoo was of a hard type of pigment which is impossible to blast with a laser. Angelina is not the only person who this has happened to. Always ask before you go under the tattoo gun to find out exactly what type of ink is being used in your tattoo - that way you will know what to expect if the day ever comes that you do not want to have the piece anymore.

There is nothing worse then sitting through 5-6 laser sessions only to find out that you will always have a permanent memory of your tattoo only faded and looking like hell.

Probably one of the boldest places to get a tattoo is on your face. Its right there, unless its around your eye, you’re not going to be able to hide it with sunglasses.

The first celeb to really go all out with a serious face piece was Mike Tyson, now he was just loopie as hell to begin with but this just brought him to a whole new level of craziness. He got some weird ass tribal tattoo on his face & the media just ate it up. Not like he really has a career anymore to hang onto, but this is kinda the nail in the coffin that Mr. Tyson will not be staring in any serious upcoming movies or Broadway plays.

Now lets just say that Mike wants to get that tattoo removed. I would bet that the face has to be one of the most, if not the most, painful places where one could get a tattoo. Especially on the side of the head where he got this amazing piece of tribal crap. So how would one go about getting a tattoo like this removed. Almost all professional laser tattoo removal specialists, that we have talked to, said they would not do laser on a face tattoo - for the main reason that the possibility of scaring would just be too great. That and the pain would most likely be unbearable.

So choose wisley where you decide to get your tattoo, a face tattoo is a very bold statement, as is a neck tattoo. It will be the first thing that people see when they see you.

Story of a friend who regrets getting her foot tattoo.

“I thought it was going to be cool at the time, but - I just wasn’t thinking straight that night and I ended up with getting a foot full of stupidity.

All of my friends at the time were getting tattoos and I figured I would also. I had just turned 18 and wanted to express myself and stand out from the conformist life style that my parents tended to force on me. The best way I felt I could do this was to do something which had been taboo in my household. Get a tattoo!

First off the tattoo hurt & I whelped in the chair as the artist went to work, drawing what I wanted to be a great scene of the beach. Instead I got something that looked like a dog had crapped a rainbow on my foot. Instantly I hated it. It was the middle of the summer & I was so embarrassed by it I had to go to the store and buy a pair of construction boots to cover up the monstrosity. I spent my summer not with my feet in the sand, but my boots clunking around as I walked the board walk. When people saw my tattoo I would fake it and act like I liked it, but deep down inside I was more depressed then an EMO kid who just got the new “30 Seconds to Mars” CD.

Finally I went to my parents on bended knee & I said “Mommy, Daddums - can I please get this tattoo removed?”

They agreed to tap into their retirement fund & help me erase this memory of juvenile bad choices.

That was 2 years ago. I have been through 4 laser treatments and the pain is so horrific that I can not bare go back for another one. I am a big baby to pain to begin with but this is truly horrible. I really wish I had heard of one of the tattoo removal balms before I signed up to do laser.

So I am now stuck, with a tattoo that is half removed and looks like a dog took a rainbow dump on my foot then attempted to lick it off. One day I will go back and get it complete. Until then, I have “60 Seconds to Mars” on repeat in my room.
